The sensitivity of vWF:FVIII, vWF:RCo, and vWF:CBA was 100%, 100%, and 80%, respectively. vWF:Ag was detected in 100% of 20 samples obtained from 20 patients at the time of presentation, 100% of 20 post-Hippocrates samples from 20 patients during the follow-up, and in 11 of 40 post-Hippocrates samples from 28 patients for whom samples were drawn within 2 weeks before the plasma exchange. vWF:Ag concentration was measured by a ristocetin cofactor assay (vWF:RCo), a factor VIII dependent and vWF-independent assay (vWF:FVIII), and a vWF assay (vWF:CBA) in 44 samples taken at the time of the presentation of 39 patients with TTP and in 53 samples taken during the clinical follow-up of 28 of the 39 patients. We have evaluated the clinical validity of assays for the detection of vWF:Ag in the diagnosis of TTP as well as the clinical predictors of success. The presence of von Willebrand factor (vWF) antigen (vWF:Ag) in the plasma has been reported to be useful in the diagnosis and follow-up of patients with TTP.
